We are about to set our course to Cambodia, where we will visit the mysterious Apsara. We are going to explore their lives, study their traditional dance, and mix it with our own culture. Hope we become the ambassadors of a fairy world to another!
The project "Secret about Apsara" is an extension of the "Rice in the Sunshine" project (2021), both directed by Taiwanese dancer Tsai-Rou. In "Rice in the Sunshine", dancers from Cambodia and Taiwan connected to their own territories and traditional dances through their rice cultures. The dancers brought their inspirations to the screen, and learned each other's body movement in video calls. While COVID stopped us from meeting face to face, we tried a new mixed form of art, making the camera itself as an actor.
As traveling becomes possible again, we are heading to Phare Ponleu Selpak at Batambang, Cambodia. Friends will be united, and a new work of art will be created collaboratively. We are looking forward to it!
---------------------------------------
The workshop will be divided into two sessions.
In the first session, participants will experience the entire process of practicing traditional Cambodian dance, starting from tying and wearing the pants, warming up, and learning basic hand gestures.
In the second session, we will share excerpts of our rehearsal with local dancers and discuss the differences in dance culture between the two countries observed during our exchange in Cambodia. We will explore how these differences are embodied in the dancers' physical expressions and integrated into their lives.
Through a dialogue between Taiwanese culture, traditional dance, and Cambodian culture, we aim to discover each other's characteristics and qualities. We also hope to promote diversity among workshop participants, fostering a sense of "re"communication.
